Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has extended the contract with external consultant Matthias Sammer ahead of time until 30 June 2025.
"I am always very pleased to be able to draw on Matthias Sammer's expertise in many areas, which, by the way, are by no means limited to the first team," emphasised CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.
Sammer is a renowned football expert who is able to look at "his" sport from many different angles. In his five years as a player with BVB, he won two German Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA World Club Championship. During his time as coach of the club between 2000 and 2004, he also claimed the 2002 German championship title. In the intervening time, the Dresden native, has been acting as an external advisor to BVB since 2018 and has also worked as Sporting director of FC Bayern Munich from 2012 to 2016 and, as a TV pundit, and is therefore very familiar with the media's view of football as well.
At the request of both sides, Sammer's new contract takes into account the Corona pandemic and its immense economic impact on professional football.
"I am delighted that we will continue on our joint path in Dortmund in the future. Michael Zorc will leave the club in the summer after many years, and I would like to play my part as an external advisor to support the management and Michael's successor Sebastian Kehl to the best of my ability," said Matthias Sammer, adding: "The situation in the midst of a worldwide pandemic is challenging. We have not yet reached the end of our task. At BVB, we have a lot planned and now we are getting down to work.”
