Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Djed Spence is in talks with Brentford over a move across London according to Football Insider – which could kill off any chances of Burnley landing his signature this month.

90min reported on Tuesday that the Championship table-toppers were battling with Premier League clubs for the services of Spence for the remainder of the 2022-23 season on loan in what would have been an ambitious swoop for the 22-year-old.

Spence is out of favour at Spurs following his summer move from Middlesbrough, which came off the back of strong performances for Nottingham Forest on loan in the Championship last season.

The right-sided player has seen the pitch just six times this season though under Antonio Conte, and the seemingly imminent arrival of Pedro Porro from Sporting CP is set to push Spence furhter down the pecking order.

Yes No

It appears that Vincent Kompany will not get his hands on the exciting wing-back though, as Brentford look to press ahead with a move for Spence and are in negotiations with their top flight rivals in a potential loan-to-buy deal.

The Verdict

Burnley were always going to be a very slim chance considering they are in the Championship, but they do not even need Spence when you look at all the factors.

Connor Roberts and Vitinho are two top right-backs and are doing just fine in Burnley’s quest to make it back to the Premier League – adding a third in Spence would just not be needed.

And he showed last season at Forest that he suits a wing-back position the most – Burnley operate with a back four under Kompany so that is another reason why Spence would not particularly fit in at Turf Moor.

It was always likely that Spence would head to another Premier League club, and that appears to be the likeliest course of action now with Brentford’s concrete interest being apparent.
