Burnley could be in store for a difficult summer, as Vincent Kompany is being eyed up by Bayern Munich.

The Clarets had quite a difficult and frustrating 2023/24 season, as they weren’t able to impose themselves on the Premier League like they did in the Championship the previous campaign.

Burnley won just five of their 38 league games, drawing nine and losing the rest, meaning in the end they were cut adrift in their bid to beat the drop.

So, now the Lancashire side are returning to the second tier, with expectations that they will be too good for the league once again.

However, things may not be as straight forward as they were last time in the Championship, as the club may be about to lose their manager, as Bayern Munich are heavily linked with Kompany.

Vincent Kompany is interested in the Bayern Munich job

It has been a rather chaotic few weeks for Bayern Munich, as they have been searching for a permanent manager to replace Thomas Tuchel.

The German side announced in February that Tuchel would be leaving his role at the end of the season.

Since then, there have been a host of names linked to the role, including Xabi Alonso, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag, to name just a few.

It was then believed that Tuchel could end up staying at the Allianz Arena, but before their last game of the season, he confirmed he would be leaving the football club.

So, that means Munich’s search for a new manager continues, and that has now led them to be interested in Burnley’s Vincent Kompany.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Kompany has been considered an option by Bayern Munich in recent days, despite just being relegated with the Clarets.

He added that Kompany has been discussed internally by the club’s board. While it has been reported by talkSPORT that the Belgian is interested in the job at Bayern Munich.

This will come as a big surprise to Kompany and the Burnley supporters, but surely the Lancashire club can understand the reasons for the Belgian being interested in the job.

Burnley surely understand Kompany’s stance on the Bayern Munich job

Burnley may have been bracing themselves to receive approaches for their manager, Vincent Kompany, but not many associated with the club would have expected Bayern Munich to possibly come calling.

The Belgian has just finished his second season in charge of the Clarets, and while it was a hugely disappointing season, Kompany can come out of it with some dignity, as he refused to change the way he wanted his side to play, despite not picking up results.

That patient, possession-based approach worked wonders for them in the 2022/23 season, as Burnley dominated the Championship, securing the title with 101 points.

As mentioned, the club continued with that style of play, but they struggled to have the same impact in the top flight, as Burnley, for the majority, were the side chasing the ball instead of having it.

But Kompany has overall been a massive success during his time with Clarets, as he’s managed 96 games in all competitions, with him winning 41 and losing 31. He has picked up 147 points in his time at Turf Moor, averaging 1.53 points per game, as per Transfermarkt.

Burnley would, of course, love to have Kompany in the dugout for the 2024/25 season, as he continues to impress in the early years of management, but also because it gives the club a greater chance of returning to the Premier League.

However, the Clarets may be preparing themselves for one or two clubs to be interested in the Belgian, especially from the Premier League, but they probably would have been expecting Bayern Munich to come calling.

Not because Kompany is not good enough, but given that he hasn’t been in management for too long and given the other names that have been linked to the role.

But it now seems that the German club could indeed be looking at Kompany as the man to lead them out next season. This will be disappointing to Burnley, as they will not want to lose their manager and then have to find a replacement this summer.

However, surely the club cannot stand in the way of Kompany if he does decide this is an opportunity he cannot refuse.

It is not every day that a manager gets looked at by Bayern Munich, and while there may be doubts that it is too early in his career, or he is ready for that type of job, Burnley must respect the Belgian’s wishes if he thinks this is a chance he cannot refuse.

It is still very early days, but if Kompany does decide this is what he wants to do, Burnley should be disappointed they have lost their manager, but understand that an opportunity like this doesn’t come around a lot, and it is Kompany’s chance to grasp it.

The move may not work out, and it could backfire, but the Belgian may regret not taking it, and he could see it, as it’s either another season in the Championship with Burnley or managing in the Champions League with Bayern Munich.
