Burnley: Vincent Kompany, Chelsea details emerge prior to his Bayern Munich move

Vincent Kompany turned down Chelsea when he was Burnley boss before he knew that Bayern Munich would come in for him.

It’s been a turbulent period for the Clarets, who suffered relegation from the Premier League last season, despite heavily investing in the squad after promotion.

Even though the side struggled, Kompany’s reputation doesn’t appear to have suffered within the game, as the Belgian has landed the top job at Bayern Munich, with the Bavarian giants announcing his arrival this week.

Vincent Kompany turned down Chelsea

At his unveiling, Kompany claimed there had been other clubs interested in him this summer, and The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that he could’ve ended up in charge of Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino left the Premier League side after a sixth-placed finish last season, and they have ended up turning to Enzo Maresca ahead of the next campaign.

However, Nixon explained that Kompany had admirers at Stamford Bridge, and they had been keen on speaking to him about the vacancy, with the ex-Anderlecht chief having been on their radar 12 months ago after Burnley’s promotion.

But, Kompany did not want to speak to the Londoners, with the update stating that he made the decision before knowing that Bayern Munich were going to approach him.

Vincent Kompany couldn’t turn down Bayern Munich opportunity

This is another surprising update, both in the sense that Chelsea wanted to speak to Kompany, and that he turned them down.

To many observers, Burnley were big underachievers last season with the total points they picked up, as there was serious investment into the team, but they made a lot of mistakes.

Nevertheless, Kompany is clearly regarded as a top coach, and you can understand why he felt he simply had to move to Munich, as he is now in charge of one of the biggest clubs in the world who will be expecting to win trophies domestically and to compete for the Champions League next year.

It’s obviously not what Burnley wanted, and they will perhaps be disappointed that Kompany didn’t repay their loyalty this season, but he has joined a giant of world football, and this update suggests he wasn’t just going to leave for anyone.

Burnley’s summer plans

Clearly, the club needs to appoint a new head coach as a priority, and even with the side back in the Championship, it’s still an attractive job as there are a lot of young talented players in the squad, so they should be able to push for promotion.

Then, once the new boss is in place, it will be about making a few tweaks to the squad, as it’s inevitable that some will be on the move, whilst the next head coach will undoubtedly want to bring in his own new players.

So, it’s shaping up to be a very busy summer for Burnley, and it will be very interesting to see who is leading the team come August and how the XI looks when the new season rolls around.
