Burnley have offered Frank Lampard the head coach role as they look to bring the ex-Chelsea chief in as Vincent Kompany’s successor.
The Clarets are preparing for life back in the Championship after a disappointing year that saw them relegated, and they’ve had to deal with upheaval after Bayern Munich appointed Kompany as their new head coach.
That left Burnley on the lookout for his replacement, and a host of names have been linked with the vacancy in the past few days.
One of those is Lampard, and TBR Football has now claimed that the 45-year-old has been ‘offered’ the job.
The ex-England international has been out of work since an interim spell at Chelsea in 2023, and this would be the fourth club he has worked with during his coaching career.
Lampard started out with Derby County, and he took the Rams to the play-off final in his only season with the club, but they lost at Wembley to Aston Villa.
After that, he was handed a chance at Chelsea, who finished fourth in his first campaign, and he was dismissed in January 2021.
Another spell in the Premier League followed with Everton, with Lampard battling at the bottom end of the table with the Toffees, who he did manage to keep up before results dipped in the second season when he was dismissed.
It’s fair to say that Lampard doesn’t have the best reputation among supporters, but when you look at his results on paper, you could argue he gets a somewhat raw deal, as he has done reasonably well at times.
Nevertheless, the jury is still out, and he would arrive at Turf Moor with a real point to prove, and it would be a fantastic opportunity for him considering he is currently out of work.
He would inherit a talented, young squad that should be capable of mixing it with the best in the Championship, and there’s no doubt that promotion will be the aim.
Following on from that, whilst Lampard shouldn’t be viewed as a disastrous appointment, it’s clearly a risk.
He is someone who has only had one year in the Championship, and his Derby side were helped by several high-profile loan players, although Lampard obviously had a role in bringing them in.
There are many coaches both in the UK and abroad that would love the chance to work with this Burnley squad, as they would back themselves to take the club back to the Premier League.
So, this is a bold move, and owner Alan Pace and the others making the decision will come in for criticism if it backfires, as there will be accusations that they went for the biggest name as opposed to the best person for the job.
