According to talkSPORT, Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Trafford ahead of a busy deadline for Scott Parker's men. The Magpies would prefer to do a loan deal with an obligation to buy to help with PSR requirements after a £15 million bid was rejected earlier in the transfer window, with Burnley after £20 million for the Englishman.

A tweet from Sacha Tavolieri indicated that the Clarets have put Royal Antwerp's Jean Butez's name ahead if Trafford was to exit Lancashire today.

Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens have already agreed terms with the French goalkeeper but won't move for the shot-stopper if former Nottingham Forest keeper Brice Samba stays at Will Still's side.

Parker is clearly preparing for all the eventualities if Trafford was to leave.

Butez has also been the subject of interest from Anderlecht earlier in this window in replacement for former Leicester City legend Kasper Schmeichel, but Burnley looks to be a potential next destination for the 29-year-old.

The Frenchman has spent the majority of his career in Belgium with Antwerp but previously came through the academy at Lille with a loan move to fellow Belgium outfit Mouscron in the past.

Butez was also linked with Burnley earlier in last season's transfer window with Vincent Kompany in charge.

Butez kept 20 clean sheets in 40 games in the 2022/23 season as he helped Antwerp claim the Belgian league title.

Antwerp CEO Sven Jaecques admitted the club wouldn't stand in his way as long as their valuation was met.

Jaecques told Belgian publication Gazet van Antwerpen in July 2023: "Jean had his best season ever.

"At the age of 28, he has reached a good age to make a transfer and (he has) already indicated that he wants to take the next step.

"If that opportunity comes, we will not block Jean – provided that the right price is offered."

Burnley shouldn't rush into deal with Butez

Trafford hasn't said anything about potentially leaving Turf Moor this summer.

The Clarets shouldn't favour a goalkeeper deal with other areas needing strengthening, with work going into their No.1 department earlier this window.

Burnley have more than good enough back-up in the goalkeeping department with Etienne Green and Vaclav Hladky, who joined from Ipswich Town this summer after helping them with their promotion to the Premier League, playing all 46 Championship games.

The Czech keeper also kept a clean sheet and performed well in Burnley's 5-0 victory against Cardiff City.
