We asked ‘Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey’ to give us his match ratings and player comments after Burnley 1 Newcastle 4.

A potential banana skin turned into a stroll in the metaphorical sunshine, on an otherwise drab afternoon in East Lancashire.

Three to the good at half time, four different goal scorers, a missed penalty and loads of chances going begging, meant it was a very comfortable afternoon for Newcastle United, who are now up to sixth with European qualification in our hands.

“Europe Again, Ole, Ole” the away end chanted incessantly as the game drew to a close and starting with our fans, I’m awarding them a perfect 10 for their outstanding performance yesterday.

Player ratings

Dubravka – 7.5

I’m not going to change my mind on Dubravka but fair’s fair, he didn’t have much to do and what he did do was pretty good, particularly that save from Larsen at 0-0 which had he conceded, yesterday afternoon might have turned out very different.

Could he have taken a better position for their goal? Maybe, but maybe to think he could, is me being harsh?

Livramento – 8.5

I thought Livramento fabulous.

He defended well and got up the pitch plenty. That run that led to our first goal was excellent.

Shortly afterwards, Tino got into a great position and maybe should have scored, but Muric made a decent save. That he was so far forward shows the attacking intent from this lad.

Krafth – 7.5

Solid and steady.

Didn’t put a foot wrong and showed himself an able stand in for the injured Schar.

Burn – 8

Another sold performance from our big man from Blyth.

There was a perfectly timed sliding tackle from BDB when the game was still goalless, which was worth its weight in gold and Burn did really well in winning possession up the field, which led to Bruno’s goal.

When Botman is back, he’ll have a job getting back into the starting eleven ahead of big Dan at this rate.

Hall – 8.5

A stellar display from young Lewis at left back, to match Tino’s performance at right back.

After he was caught in possession in a dangerous position early on, Hall never put a foot wrong for the rest of the game and acquitted himself brilliantly, both defending and when getting forward.

His interception and pass was crucial in the build up to Longstaff’s goal.

I thought he was terrific.

Longstaff – 7.5

A great finish from Sean to make it 2-0 and give us some breathing space on 35 minutes.

He worked his socks off and I was so pleased he got on the scoresheet.

Longstaff still doesn’t look 100% so Eddie bringing him off towards the end, to be replaced by big Joe, seemed a sensible move.

Guimaraes – 9

What more can be said about the man?

Bruno covered every blade of grass.

He shows for the ball, shields it well and wins so many duels in that central position. His distribution aint bad either.

Guimaraes took his goal really well, making it three in his last five games and he could have had another yesterday, bringing out a fantastic save from Muric late on.

Bruno was my MOTM.

Murphy – 8.5

Two assists from Jacob to add to the one he got against Sheffield last week, Murphy is having a great end to the season.

Showed hunger and desire down the right flank and was a handful all afternoon.

Showed great composure as well as great awareness and was totally unselfish in setting up Isak to make it 4-0.

Gordon – 8.5

As usual, I thought Anthony Gordon had a great game.

He was tireless in his running and deservedly won the penalty that Alexander Isak unfortunately was unable to convert.

Gordon’s assist for Bruno’s goal was his 10th of the season which complements the ten goals he’s also contributed.

Anthony was unlucky not to score himself in the first half, a decent shot from outside the area being deflected away for a corner.

Isak – 8.5

Alex will be disappointed with missing the penalty but made amends shortly afterwards with his 20th Premier League goal of the campaign and lets not forget, our silky Swedish striker has only started 24 league games.

After Haaland’s four goal tally later in the day, I doubt Isak can overhaul the Norwegian for the golden boot, but he’s the first Newcastle United player to hit 20 Premier League goals since Shearer did it two decades ago, and as far as goals per minutes are concerned, Alex is well clear at the top of the leaderboard.

There is so much more to Isak’s game and we saw plenty of that at Turf Moor.

Wilson – 8.5

I said that Callum looked lively last week against Sheffield and that bodes well for our run in. How prophetic of me!

I thought Wilson was outstanding in that first 45.

Booked by the hapless Anthony Taylor when he should have been awarded a penalty, Callum dusted himself down and got the opening goal at a crucial time, a real poacher’s effort that makes him Newcastle United’s second highest goalscorer in the Premier League.

The strength he showed to win the ball and set up Murphy to assist Longstaff’s goal was awesome and if Wilson can stay injury free, he remains a huge asset.

Substitutes

Let’s face it, when Eddie made the first of those five changes, the game was well and truly over and so I didn’t think our substitutes made that much of an impression, although Harvey Barnes showed some sublime skill late on and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Perhaps what was more important than what our substitutes actually did, is the fact that we were able to draw on the likes of Joelinton, Almiron, Barnes and Anderson from the bench, giving those who started some well deserved respite, with options aplenty to change things if we had been chasing the game.

It would be remiss of me to ask what Matt Ritchie was thinking when he gave away the corner that we conceded from. Imagine if the game had been more finely poised at that juncture!

Finally, although he didn’t get on yesterday, I’m hoping Nick Pope is going to start our last three games.
