Now many, perhaps most, would say Robert Lewandowski, who is once again scoring goals at an incredible rate. Throw in the assist he has and he has directly contributed to a goal every 72.6 minutes so far this season.

But Erling Haaland (13 goals, four assists) has a direct goal contribution every 53 minutes.

Injury has prevented him from being right alongside Lewandowski as the top goalscorer in the league but the Norwegian just gets better and better; Haaland’s combination play and heading ability have improved incredibly since he joined Dortmund and he is now a truly complete striker, and a force of nature to boot.

Coach of the Season so far 👔

Every season, Christian Streich works wonders. So much so that it has become normal and we have stopped appreciating his work at SC Freiburg as much as we should.

The squad is almost identical to last season — Nico Schlotterbeck has been brilliant having returned from his loan at Union Berlin and Maximilian Eggestein has been solid since joining — but Streich is getting so much more out of his players. Freiburg sit third as we head into 2022.

Streich, who recently revealed he does all opposition analysis himself, has developed individuals and moulded them into a flexible, organised, well-drilled side with the ability to compete with any side in the league. All on a shoestring budget.

Signing of the Season so far ✍️

With the pandemic impacting clubs there was very little in the way of transfer business over the summer.

Gregor Kobel has impressed behind a shaky Dortmund backline, Josko Gvardiol and David Raum have looked good for RB Leipzig and TSG Hoffenheim respectively, and Aster Vranckx looks like a potential star for VfL Wolfsburg.

More impressive than all of them, though, has been Gladbach’s Manu Kouadio Koné. Superbly calm on the ball and very hard-working, he looks like a brilliant capture from Toulouse.

There have been closer, more dramatic games, like Dortmund’s trip to Leverkusen, Augsburg’s win over Bayern, and some late comebacks from Köln.

But nothing stands up to the stunning brutality of Bayern’s demolition of Leverkusen in terms of impact. Leverkusen were flying and would have gone top had they won when Bayern visited.

The champions made the statement of all statements, scoring four in the space of seven first half minutes to lead 5-0 at the break.
