The Telegraph report that Saka ‘sparked interest’ from big European teams with his performances this season. He’s currently on a £7,000-a-week contract, expiring in 2021. As a result, it’s crunch time for an extension or Arsenal’s last chance to cash in.
The report adds that the current coronavirus lockdown is helping, though. It’s giving time to Arsenal to persuade the 18-year-old to stay, amid interest from Bundesliga clubs.
David Ornstein previously reported Arsenal were working on a new five-year deal for Saka. They were optimistic at the time, though Ornstein admitted nothing was imminent. That was back in February, so a lot changed between then and now.
Saka made 29 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions before the lockdown. He scored three goals and provided 10 assists, making himself the team’s top creator.
The rumours of a possible England call-up even started to grow – again, before the lockdown erased that possibility. If anything, the situation is working in Saka’s favour though, as he has a further year to prove himself before the Euros.
In the meantime, Arsenal might want to point out to him how those chances might suffer if he gambles on game-time somewhere else.
