Over the weekend, Squawka tweeted that Bukayo Saka was the only player to have created 50+ chances, completed 50+ take-ons, scored 10+ goals, and provided 10+ assists in the Premier League in 2023.
But it’s not just in domestic competition where Saka is excelling, and he’s now set a new record in the Champions League.
OptaJoe reports that Saka is the first player in Champions League history to both score and assist in each of his first three home games in the competition.
Only two other players have ever scored and assisted in three consecutive home games since 2003: Karim Benzema and Luis Suarez.
But neither player did so in their very first three home games in the Champions League, so that makes Saka’s achievement unique.
As a result, it’s not surprising to see Saka at the top of the Champions League standings for goals and assists this season, racking up seven already.
Saka sits one ahead of Alvaro Morata, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Gabriel Jesus, and Harry Kane, who all have six.
Saka is also one of just two players in Europe’s big-five leagues to have provided 10 assists in all competitions this season. The other is Florian Wirtz, of German league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
There were some doubters about Saka due to his lack of experience in the Champions League ahead of this season, with some questioning whether he could handle the step up to Europe’s biggest stage.
But the winger has a habit of proving the critics wrong, and he’s helped Mikel Arteta’s side breeze into the knockout stages at the first time of asking.
