There was no love lost between the two Brunos on Sunday evening as Newcastle United ran riot at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Manchester United in the Premier League was already emphatic, but Bruno Guimaraes ensured the final word was his — and made sure everyone watching knew it.

After calmly slotting home the fourth goal following a mistake from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, Guimaraes turned straight to the crowd, thumping his chest and pointing to the back of his shirt while repeatedly shouting, “I am the Bruno.” It was a celebration that appeared to be directed at Bruno Fernandes, whose frustrating evening came to a premature end just moments later.

The Manchester United captain was hauled off in the closing stages, with Ruben Amorim clearly looking ahead to Thursday’s Europa League tie against Lyon. But as Guimaraes basked in the glory of another statement victory for the Magpies, Fernandes sat on the bench with his head in his hands, unable to hide his disappointment.

"My team-mates – I only get frustrated with them because I know how good they can be. It’s tough representing this club. They want to win because they know how much it means, but we just couldn’t keep up in the second half."

Newcastle news: How Bruno Guimaraes reacted after Man Utd clash

Guimaraes, by contrast, delivered both on and off the pitch. The Newcastle star is already adored by fans for his passion, quality, and connection with the club. His goal capped off a ruthless second-half display and pushed Newcastle closer to securing Champions League football once again.

The victory came with extra meaning, too. Manager Eddie Howe was absent from the sidelines after being admitted to hospital on Saturday night. And the players knew exactly who they were playing for. Guimaraes told Premier League Productions.

"When we went onto the pitch, we said we were going to play for him. He has been unbelievable for us and we missed him on the training ground this week. We hope this win gives him happiness and we hope to see him back next game."

"This team, these fans, and this stadium! Three very important points and we keep going in pursuit of our goals. One game at a time, always. Howay the boys. Thank you, Jesus, for everything you do in my life."

It was a night of dominance for Newcastle — and a message delivered loud and clear by the only Bruno that mattered.
