Leon Clarke and Glenn Whelan are both training with Bristol Rovers, Joey Barton has revealed to Bristol Live.
The pair remain free agents having been released at the end of last season by Shrewsbury Town and Fleetwood Town respectively.
Clarke made 10 appearances in League One for Salop last season, scoring one goal before being let go upon the expiry of his contract.
The 36-year-old had been taken on trial by National League North side Gloucester City, but the club decided not to make a move for the striker.

Whelan played for Barton at Fleetwood last season, making 43 appearances during a two-year spell with the Cod Army.
The 37-year-old midfielder remains on the lookout for a new club, but could be set for a reunion with Barton should he impress on trial.
Barton has revealed that the pair were both training with Rovers, with a view to potentially signing them before the transfer window closes.
Rovers have endured a poor start to the League Two campaign, losing three of their first four games and winning only once.
The Verdict
Barton currently has an experienced squad on the books at the Memorial Stadium, and Clarke and Whelan would be two more experienced options to bring in.
For me, though, do they need more experienced, old players? Clarke and Whelan are 36 and 37 respectively, and only have one year left in them at best.
They already have an experienced forward on the books in Brett Pitman, so maybe a younger option is needed to compliment him.
