Brentford Set Sights on Bournemouth’s Dango Ouattara

Brentford are exploring the possibility of signing Bournemouth winger Dango Ouattara as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season. According to Sky Sports, “the West London club are one of several interested in the 23-year-old forward and an approach to Bournemouth is expected.”

Ouattara’s future on the south coast has been cast into uncertainty after he informed Bournemouth of his wish to “explore his options this summer amid the interest.” The Cherries, who signed the Burkina Faso international from FC Lorient in January 2023 for £20 million, have three years remaining on his contract.

Replacing Mbeumo and Reshaping the Attack

Brentford’s interest comes in the wake of Bryan Mbeumo’s high-profile departure to Manchester United for £71 million. The club have been actively seeking a wide player who can add pace, direct running and end product. Ouattara’s profile fits the bill, having recorded 11 goal contributions in the Premier League last season.

The Bees are also keeping tabs on Ipswich winger Omari Hutchinson, though Sky Sports report they “have not yet agreed a deal” for the 20-year-old. While Hutchinson offers potential for the future, Ouattara brings proven top-flight experience, a factor that could make him the priority target.

Competition Across England and Europe

Bournemouth have reportedly fielded “numerous enquiries from teams in the Premier League and Europe.” Their stance remains firm: they do not want to sell unless their valuation is met. This could prove a hurdle for Brentford, particularly with other clubs in the mix and the inflated market for attacking players this summer.

Ouattara’s stock has risen sharply since his arrival in England, with his pace, work rate and ability to stretch defences making him an asset for any side seeking to play on the front foot. However, his desire to move means Bournemouth face a balancing act between securing the best price and avoiding an unsettled player disrupting preparations.

Strategic Fit for Brentford’s Model

Brentford’s recruitment approach has consistently focused on players who can offer immediate impact while holding long-term resale value. Ouattara, at 23, fits both criteria. His ability to operate on either wing and his physical attributes align well with Keith Andrews’ tactical set-up, especially in counter-attacking situations.

If Brentford are able to secure his services, it would represent another example of their ability to replace key departures without compromising style or competitiveness. Yet, as Sky Sports outline, “they would only sanction a sale at their valuation,” meaning negotiations may take time and could hinge on player pressure.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Brentford fans, Ouattara feels like a statement signing in a summer where losing Bryan Mbeumo has left a noticeable void. Eleven goal contributions in the Premier League for Bournemouth is no small feat, especially in a side not consistently challenging at the top end of the table.

His pace and directness could give Brentford a new dimension, particularly in transition play. The ability to run at defenders and open up space for Yoane Wissa would be a welcome boost.

However, there will also be concern over the competition from other clubs. When Premier League and European sides are circling, transfer fees tend to rise sharply, and Brentford are not in the habit of overpaying. Fans might hope Ouattara himself will push for the move, potentially helping the Bees get a fairer deal.

There is also intrigue over Omari Hutchinson. While less experienced, his potential is high, and if Brentford could land both, the depth and variety in wide areas would be significantly improved. Ultimately, fans will see Ouattara as a player who can step straight into Mbeumo’s shoes, but only if the board can move quickly enough to fend off rival interest.
