Neil MacFarlane's side were on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline against a resolute Derby County Under-21s side on Monday evening.

Chances fell to Ryan Trevitt, Ashley Hay and Paris Maghoma but despite having an experienced side, the boys could not turn their dominance into goals.

Both teams were looking to get their first points in Group I as both lost their openers against Chelsea U21s and Bournemouth U21s respectively.

Brentford’s strong line-up made a positive start to proceedings, controlling the ball and make the young Rams side work hard early on.

Two early chances fell the way of Ashley Hay as the striker was looking to add to his recent collection of goals.

The first came through his own good work, pressing the keeper into a mistake but failing to divert his effort on goal. The second came through a great cross from Ryan Trevitt but the striker’s shot was saved well by Joe Shattell.

Matt Cox had to pull out a great save to deny Cruz Allen as the away side had their first shot on target.

Despite the home side’s good play, there was a lack of clear-cut chances.

Maghoma danced through a number of challenges and unleashed a left-footed shot that was saved.

The second half started in a poor manner as Ji-soo was penalised for fouling Jack Perry in the penalty box.

Cox made the all-important save though, denying Harry Hawkins from 12 yards out.

That missed penalty gave the boys much-needed energy to push for the opener and Roerslev went close to connecting with a Ben Lee diagonal pass but the keeper was well positioned to claim.

Derby broke the deadlock and it came from Brentford’s mistakes, sloppy passes out of the back allowed Niall McAndrew to pounce and capitalise on a number of erros, giving his side the lead.

Trevitt thought he had equalised for the team late on as he lunged in to connect to a cross but Shattell made an unbelievable save to deny the midfielder.

Ethan Brierley was next to have an effort on goal from just inside the box but Shattell was there to make the stop yet again.

That was how the game would end and the result means that MacFarlane’s side are the only team in the group on zero points.

Brentford are next in action on Thursday 24th October as they take on Ipswich Town Under-21s away from at Portman Road.
