“Lukas is a promising and talented youngster,” said sporting director Roland Virkus. “He has developed a lot at Hertha, but also with Germany U19s, who he captains. He’s an exciting prospect and we’re pleased that he’s decided to join us.” Ullrich himself commented: “Borussia is a big club. I’m excited to learn from the experienced players here and to then get started.”
The Berlin-born defender joined Hertha from Borussia Friedrichsfelde aged 11 in summer 2015. He went on to play for all of Hertha’s youth sides. He played 16 times in the U19s Bundesliga last season, scoring five goals. He completed the full 90 minutes in all three championship play-off matches, where Hertha lost 2-1 in the final to BVB. Ullrich also featured three times in the U19s DFB-Pokal.
Ullrich has been part of Hertha’s first team since the start of this season, though he is yet to make his Bundesliga debut. He has featured 18 times for their U23s in the Regionalliga Nordost this term, scoring two goals and setting up a further four. He also made three appearances for the U19s in the regular league season (1 goal).
The left-back has won 19 caps in total for various Germany youth sides: two for the U17s (no goals), seven for the U18s (2 goals) and 10 for the U19s (6 goals).
