Borussia Dortmund have parted company with head coach Marco Rose after just a single season in the dugout at Westfalenstadion.

Rose led Dortmund to second in the Bundesliga this term, though they were eight points adrift of champions Bayern Munich.

BVB also exited the DFB-Pokal in the last 16, losing to second-tier St Pauli. Their performance in Europe was disappointing too. After finishing third on goal difference in a kind Champions League group, they fell at the first hurdle in the Europa League - losing to eventual finalists Rangers.

The club confirmed Rose's departure on Friday, with CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke citing underachievement as the main reason for the coach's exit.

"This day is not an easy one for any of us, because the mutual respect among each other was, is and remains great. After a season that was unsatisfactory for various reasons, we had to realize that we didn't get the most out of our opportunities in many areas," Watzke said.

Rose himself added: "Despite a difficult season with many imponderables, I was convinced of our path. During our conversation I got the impression that the 100% conviction of all those responsible is no longer there. Ultimately, we therefore decided together to end the collaboration."

Dortmund will now begin the process of finding Rose's replacement. Whoever takes over will join a squad strengthened by three additions - with Niklas Sule, Karim Adeyemi and Nico Schlotterbeck already penning terms.
