Borussia Dortmund are keeping an eye on Naby Keita’s contract situation at Liverpool, according to The Daily Star.

Keita joined Liverpool in 2018, arriving from RB Leipzig for just short of £50 million. Since then, he has made 117 appearances in all competitions, helping his side to a Champions League, a Premier League, and both domestic cups.

However, the Guinean has struggled to reach the heights expected of him. He has often shown flashes of his best stuff, but has been unable to consistently produce this over a long period of time.

In addition, the Reds have had several concerns over his fitness. This season, his only outing has been a five-minute cameo in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

The midfielder is now in the final year of his contract. Liverpool reportedly have faith that they can convince him to renew, but the player’s intentions are currently unclear.

Should Keita refuse a new deal, there will be plenty of interest. According to The Daily Star, Borussia Dortmund are monitoring his contract situation, with a view to potentially picking him up on a free transfer.

The Black and Yellows are likely to be in the hunt for a new central midfielder this summer, with Jude Bellingham expected to depart. The teenager has attracted attention from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

While his spell in the Premier League has been frustrating, Keita excelled in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig. During his two years at Die Roten Bullen, he accumulated 14 goals and 12 assists in the league, and was named in Bundesliga Team of the Season once.

But Liverpool will be reluctant to let the 27-year-old go, given their lack of depth in midfield. The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Curtis Jones have also suffered with injury troubles, prompting the club to sign Arthur on loan from Juventus on transfer deadline day.
