Around 600 FC Girondins de Bordeaux fans had planned on attending their side’s visit to the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard to take on AS Saint-Étienne on Saturday evening. However, they have been prevented from doing so following a public decree that will ban Bordeaux fans from travelling to the stadium and its surrounding areas.
This decision came after concerns about crowd violence between two opposing Bordeaux ultra groups, the Ultras Marine and the North Gate Bordeaux, especially in the context of a lack of policing due to the Vigipirate (France’s national security alert system) being at its highest level since the March the 25th terrorist attacks on Moscow.
Bordeaux will regret not having their fans to support them as they take on a resurgent ASSE away from home. The hosts are mounting a challenge for promotion back to Ligue 1, and while a defeat to AC Ajaccio last weekend ended an eight-game unbeaten streak for the club, they will be keen to bounce back against a Bordeaux side who have struggled to find consistency this season.
