Bolton Wanderers will be putting early preparations in place to attack the upcoming League One season after a disappointing finish last term.
A dismal run of six games without a win, including four defeats at the back end of last campaign, saw Bolton fail to reach the play-offs and be condemned to an eighth-placed finish, with the club praying it can have better fortunes this time around under Steven Schumacher.
The 41-year-old previously led Plymouth Argyle to promotion out of League One, and he will be hopeful of being able to build a squad that brings success in Greater Manchester.
Over the early stages of the summer transfer window, Wanderers have been keen on bolstering their frontline, with former Wrexham man Sam Dalby recruited to the Toughsheet Community Stadium on a free transfer.
Now, a recent report has revealed that Bolton have had a £500,000 bid for Celtic forward Johnny Kenny rejected, although the club is expected to come back in with a higher offer.
Now, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon, Celtic have outlined their valuation of Kenny at £1 million, and will part ways with the 22-year-old should they be able to find a suitable replacement.
With this news in mind, FLW’s Bolton Wanderers fan pundit has issued his thoughts on Bolton being linked with Kenny.
Speaking to Football League World, Bolton Wanderers fan pundit Liam O’Meara believes Johnny Kenny would be a fantastic addition, believing his positive feedback from Celtic supporters will see him thrive in League One.
O’Meara said: “In terms of the bid for Johnny Kenny, I think that would be a brilliant move for us.
“He’s exactly the type of profile striker we need and someone who would be a very good understudy to Sam Dalby, who we’ve signed. He’s big, powerful, and strong. I know he’s highly rated at Celtic, I have a lot of Celtic-supporting friends who highly rate him, although they don’t see him breaking into that team any time soon.
“They would prefer him to go out on loan, but at 22-years-old, I’d be surprised if Celtic aren’t looking to cash in, they probably want more than what Bolton have initially offered and the potential of adding in a sell-on clause.
“I’m not surprised to see us go after him, and I think he would do very well in League One, so I’d be pleased if we did manage to get Johnny Kenny.”
Although Johnny Kenny is an exciting, up-and-coming player, a seven-figure fee for someone who has no previous experience in the English game is big gamble, particularly when Bolton Wanderers need to be getting promotion out of League One sooner rather than later.
Steven Schumacher will need guaranteed goals in the hunt for Championship football next season, and while Kenny possesses a lot of potential, they would look very silly to spend such a sizeable chunk of money on a player that many won't know what to expect from.
Because of this, Bolton should be looking for a more proven and experienced striker to lead the line. It’s still a massive club with huge potential under a promotion-winning boss, so they should bide their time and look at alternative options to see if they can negotiate a better deal.
