The rumour that Boca Juniors and River Plate have planned to build new stadiums arose from a supposed meeting between Rodolfo D’Onofrio, president of River Plate, and Mauricio Macri, president of Argentina.
As reported on Fox Sports, the construction of the new River ground will begin shortly.
The stadium will be built right across from the Monumental and would seat around 90,000 spectators. The current stadium was built in 1938 and renovated in 1978.
In addition, the same program revealed that Boca Juniors are also ready to build a new Bombonera as well. Boca have been in La Bombonera since 1940, having completed renovations in 1996.
However, the TV show did not specify whether construction at or near the current stadium or whether they will build at a completely new site.
