Zvonimir Boban has confirmed that he will not be supporting AC Milan tonight as they take on his boyhood club Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.
Milan go into tonight’s game in the Croatian capital table in sixth place after last week’s win against Girona, and now the equation is a simple one: win against Dinamo to secure that spot in the top eight of the competition, and thus direct qualification for the last 16.
Boban spoke to Croatian source HRT to preview tonight’s game at the Stadion Maksimir between two clubs close to his heart, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.
What are your emotions going into the game?
“Dinamo and Milan are two clubs that mean a lot to me, two great teams with which I had the privilege of experiencing incredible stories. Dinamo has been with me since birth, while I made Milan my own. Now I follow them both with great love and respect.”
Who will you be rooting for?
“I was born and raised as a Dinamo fan, so imagine if I root for Milan in this match. With all respect and love for Milan, I will definitely be rooting for Dinamo.”
More Stories / The Match
What does Dinamo need to beat Milan?
“It will be an open and interesting match, with many reversals and many goals. Milan are taking a lot of risks and have not yet found the right balance in defense.”
How do you judge Fabio Cannavaro’s work as the new coach of Dinamo?
“What Cannavaro is doing with Dinamo is certainly an attempt to find a balance, because he is Italian and has had great coaches as teachers. You can immediately see that he gives great importance to the organization of the team.
“I have played against Fabio many times, I know him well. He is an extraordinary person, very responsible and orderly. I think he has the same approach as a coach.
“I don’t know his technical style well, I haven’t followed his work in China, and things didn’t go very well at Benevento. But this doesn’t mean anything: he could build his first great success story with Dinamo.”
It must be said that the lack of support from Boban is perhaps expected even despite his boyhood club being Dinamo, given there has been a nearly four-year ordeal him Boban and Milan.
It actually came to an end recently with the third and final judgement from the court, too. After being fired in 2020 after publically criticising the management in an interview he was fired, and from then the two parties had been intertwined in legal proceedings.
