Beerschot were dealt a major blow to their promotion push today when head coach Andreas Wieland informed them that he wishes to leave the club to pursue a new challenge. It is expected that this will be in Austria with LASK, yet neither club has confirmed this as of yet. It is certainly bad timing for the side who, under Wieland, have suddenly emerged as a candidate for promotion to the Belgian Pro League. After 16 Challenger Pro League games the side from Antwerp sit second, level on points with Zulte Waregem on 32. They also have an identical record and goal difference, with Zulte Waregem ahead on goals scored by 31 to 27.

Beerschot are a sister club of Sheffield United, both being owned by Abdullah bin Musaid Al Saud. However, the owner of the Yorkshire side is looking to sell the Belgian club in the near future. With their current performances, the value of the club had been going up. However, with the surprising depature of the head coach, it remains to be seen whether or not this will derail the sides push for promotion. Behind them, the pre-season favourites for a promotion push in SK Beveren are putting together a strong run of form that has taken them from near the bottom of the league to just six points off the top spots.

Time is still on Beerschot’s side however. With the league resuming in January, they have a few weeks to find a new head coach and for the new appointee to get to grips with the squad.
