Celtic are looking to win another treble while the Rangers look set to finish the campaign without silverware again. That is the gulf that exists between the two clubs right now and has for a while too. The Ibrox team brought in Barry Ferguson as their interim head coach until the end of the season but with a takeover seemingly on the horizon, they might look to make a statement long-term appointment in the summer.

Steven Gerrard is viewed by most as the favourite to get the Rangers job again. He is without a club at the moment after being shown the exit door by Al-Ettifaq in January.

But what if the Rangers end up going for one of Gerrard's old managers instead? Someone he won the Champions League with.

As reported by the Daily Record, the San Francisco 49ers backed consortium are considering Rafa Benitez as Rangers' next permanent manager. The Spaniard, who has been out of work since departing Celta Vigo earlier this season, has emerged as a candidate for the Ibrox job.

Benitez is a big name in management, who has enjoyed a lot of success. But in recent years, he has been far from great.

He might have won the Champions League with Liverpool but that was two decades ago. He has had failed stints at teams like Real Madrid, Dalian Professional, Everton and Celta Vigo more recently.

It remains to be seen if the Rangers do end up making a move for Benitez. The Spaniard would certainly be a big name managerial appointment if he is indeed brought in but it remains to be seen if he would be a good one. At the end of the day, sometimes the game just passes you by and that might be the case with him.
