Celtic are not looking for a new manager currently, although you would imagine that a good board would keep a short list of preferred prospects handy at all times. So, when Jose Mourinho comments on the possibility of taking up a manager's role in Scotland one day, it’s only of passing interest to the fans.
Mourinho is in Glasgow this week as his Fenerbahce side visit Ibrox. So his thoughts on a longer stay will likely come up again.
Mourinho did sound open to managing in the Scottish league, so perhaps that could happen in the future. For Celtic fans the thought of the legendary Portuguese manager taking charge at Parkhead would likely be a nightmare scenario.
It may have been over 20 years ago now but the way his FC Porto team behaved in Seville is still a painful memory. Not to mention the fact that it feels as though his best days as a manager are well behind him now.
On the other side of the city, the Rangers fans are on the lookout for a new manager. Even if Barry Ferguson and his pals can take any sort of success from the rest of the season, it’s hard to see a way he’d be backed for the permanent role in the summer.
Stories of Rafael Benitez as a potential new manager at Ibrox are circulating, but without foundation. It’s also rumoured that Steven Gerrard might slip back into the role.
But you suspect the fans there would take a serious shine to having Mourinho in charge. Could it be possible?
So why could Mourinho in charge at Ibrox be a dream for Celtic fans? Firstly, it’s a chance to take on the Portuguese boss over a season, or however long he lasts in the role. He has shown more of his decline in Turkey recently. Being able to defeat him in matches and to trophies and titles wouldn’t completely erase the pain of losing that UEFA Cup final, but it would be a big step towards it.
Then there is Mourinho himself, as a character he’d certainly bring liveliness to the Scottish league. But how he’d manage without huge sums of money and the somewhat unrealistic expectations of the Rangers fans?
Even a takeover by the San Francisco 49ers' owners is unlikely to bring about enough for a transfer budget to suit Mourinho. Celtic fans would love to see that play out.
Although in the very short term, they’d have been hoping for a better showing from his current side Fenerbahce at home against the Rangers. There’s always this week's second leg for Mourinho to show he still can be the special one.
