Sheffield United have as many as 15 players out of contract in the summer which has prompted a huge rebuilding job after a horrendous Premier League campaign. One of the players who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season is experienced utility player Ben Osborn.

At 29 years old, Osborn has made over 121 appearances for the Blades, notably gracing the Premier League stage in 57 appearances. And although he is not necessarily the flashiest player on the field, Osborn more than compensates with his invaluable versatility.

Transitioning seamlessly across various positions, he embodies adaptability and a great work rate. Whether deployed as a left-wingback, left-winger, central midfielder, or even on the right flank, the former Nottingham Forest stalwart consistently demonstrates his willingness to contribute wherever the team needs him most.

Osborn has already spoken publicly about his desire to remain at Sheffield United beyond this season, and his manager, Chris Wilder, is keen on keeping him at Bramall Lane for the foreseeable future.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Burnley game, Wilder admitted:

“There are some options [on contracts] to be exercised. I talked about Ben Osborn’s option that we will exercise and there’s a couple of others that we’re in the process of doing.”

As the Blades gear up for a return to the Championship it is always a smart thing to do to have a few versatile players in the squad given the ruthlessness and enervating nature of the league.
