It has been a tough few weeks for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

Rovers suffered heartbreak as they missed out on the play-off places on goal difference last season, and it had looked as though they would be among the top six contenders once again this time around.

Jon Dahl Tomasson's side enjoyed a good start to the season, and they sat as high as seventh in late November, but they have picked up just four points from their last nine games.

Blackburn currently sit 18th in the table, eight points adrift of the play-offs, and they are back in action when they host Huddersfield Town at Ewood Park today.

It has been a busy start to the transfer window for Rovers, with Yasin Ayari and Ben Chrisene joining on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa respectively, while captain Lewis Travis made a surprise temporary move to Ipswich Town.

Tomasson has previously spoken of his desire to strengthen this month, and there are likely to be further new arrivals in Lancashire over the coming weeks.

However, Blackburn could face a battle to hold on to some of their key players, and according to journalist Nick Mashiter, Rovers have rejected two bids worth £1m and £1.5m from Ipswich for striker Sam Gallagher, while the 28-year-old is also attracting interest from Sunderland.

Attacking reinforcements are likely to be a priority for Blackburn this month, and TEAMtalk claim that the club have made an enquiry for Birmingham City striker Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Jutkiewicz is a proven performer at Championship level, and he would undoubtedly strengthen Rovers' forward line, but fans may have reservations about a move for the 34-year-old due to his links with local rivals Burnley.

Blackburn Rovers supporters should look past Lukas Jutkiewicz's Burnley connections

Having previously played for the likes of Everton, Coventry City, Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers, Jutkiewicz made the move to Burnley for a reported fee of £1.5m in July 2014.

However, Jutkiewicz was plagued by injury at Turf Moor, and after failing to score in 35 appearances for the Clarets, he joined Birmingham on loan in August 2016 before the deal was made permanent in January 2017.

Jutkiewicz has been an excellent servant for the Blues over the past seven-and-a-half years, and he has scored 65 goals in 322 appearances for the club so far.

The striker has not been a regular starter for Birmingham this season, but he has still been an important part of the squad, netting three goals and providing one assist in 22 games.

New Blues manager Tony Mowbray worked with the 34-year-old previously at Middlesbrough, and it remains to be seen whether he is part of the 60-year-old plans at St Andrew's.

The forward's contract at Birmingham is set to expire at the end of the season, and should the club opt to cash in on him this month, he could be a shrewd addition for Blackburn.

Goals have not been a problem for Rovers this season, and it is the 52 league goals they have conceded which have prevented further progress up the table.

However, Blackburn have been reliant on Sammie Szmodics, who is currently the Championship top scorer, to provide their attacking threat, and Tomasson will be disappointed with the lack of goals from his strikers.

Youngster Harry Leonard has scored four goals this campaign, while Gallagher has netted twice in an injury-disrupted campaign, but summer signings Niall Ennis and Semir Telalovic have yet to find the back of the net, and the former is set to join Bolton on loan.

Jutkewicz may not be as prolific as he once was, but he would bring some much-needed experience to Rovers' squad, as well as adding height and physicality to their forward line.

He could prove to be the perfect foil for Szmodics, and if he is given a run in the team, it would be no surprise to see him get on the scoresheet regularly.

The signing of Jutkiewicz is unlikely to excite Blackburn supporters, but they are in desperate need of a striker, particularly amid the uncertainty over Gallagher's future. And after the club's budget was cut in the summer, they will be unable to spend big on a new number nine.
