Kuszczak has been talking about the goalkeeping situation in B9
Former Birmingham City goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak has urged Chris Davies not to rush any decision over signing a new goalkeeper.
Shortly after being announced as the latest man in the hotseat in this half of the Second City, Davies replaced the departing Neil Etheridge and John Ruddy with the acquisitions of boyhood Bluenose Ryan Allsop from Hull City and Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who joined from Burnley.
Both shot-stoppers have enjoyed their fair share of gametime across all competitions as Blues continue to fight on three fronts, having progressed into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City in B9 on Saturday lunchtime, earning them a home tie against Newcastle United.
Given the respective qualities that Allsop and Peacock-Farrell bring to the table for Davies, the battle for the number one spot has caused strong debate among the Birmingham fanbase at points of the season, although the man who was signed from Hull continues to edge out the Northern Ireland international when it comes to league appearances, having featured in the last 16 consecutive third tier outings.
Kuszczak featured 92 times for the club between 2015 and 2019, keeping a total of 28 clean sheets in the process.
However, the man who retired following his exit, has referenced how important confidence is for a goalkeeper, and that his former side shouldn't rush into a decision involving either Allsop or Peacock-Farrell at the conclusion of the season.
“First thing first, it’s so important to focus on this season and to keep confidence high with the goalkeepers. Confidence is massive and the team is playing well and top of the table, so I wouldn’t rush this decision at all," Kuszczak explained to Football League World via 888sport.com.
“Some keepers go through bad spells, but it’s important to maintain a good positive attitude and support for goalkeepers as they can turn it around very quickly," he added.
Despite making three errors which led to goals across his first seven league starts for the club, Peacock-Farrell would continue to be an adequate goalkeeping option if Blues were to achieve a first-time promotion back to the Championship, although the regularity of his involvement could remain in doubt.
Allsop has pulled off a catalogue of fine saves since being handed his league debut against Huddersfield Town in October, as well as saving two of his three penalties faced in normal time on top of 12 clean sheets in all competitions, emerging as a fans' favourite with supporters.
However, given the spending power that the club now has, it remains to be seen whether Davies opts to make another addition to this department in the summer.
This would be particularly harsh on the former Hull man, who will feel he has a point to prove after a poor end to his solitary season in East Yorkshire, with Liam Rosenior's decision to feature the experienced figure over Ivor Pandur one of the well-documented disagreements between the now-Strasbourg boss and Tigers owner, Acun Ilicali.
But, as Kuszcak said, this isn't a predicament that can be taken lightly by those in high positions in B9, with confidence continuing to flow for the league leaders, who look to progress into the last eight of the EFL Trophy against Swindon Town on Tuesday night.
