Rico Browne has agreed the terms of a new contract at Birmingham City, according to Football Insider.

The youngster hasn't been able to make much of an impact at St Andrew's, but he's a highly-rated player and the Midlands club have seemingly been keen to tie him down to a new contract.

A lot has been said about Aston Villa's academy in recent years with the likes of Cameron Archer, Jaden Philogene and Aaron Ramsey all thriving in recent years, but Birmingham have also done extremely well.

In terms of their youth success in recent years, Jude Bellingham has clearly been the player that has gone on to do the best, moving to Borussia Dortmund before then going on to ply his trade for Real Madrid.

Establishing himself as a key player in the Spanish capital, he has also done well for England.

Jobe Bellingham has also gone on to do well at Sunderland and Jordan James, who is still with Blues, is thriving at this level. George Hall and Alfie Chang, meanwhile, have seen their development stall because of injury issues.

Browne, unlike the others mentioned above, is yet to make his first competitive senior appearance for Birmingham.

This is despite the fact he is seen as a promising player and despite the fact he has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United in the past.

Currently on loan at National League North side Rushall Olympic, he still has some way to go to become a key first-teamer at St Andrew's, but the 20-year-old has plenty of time to develop.

His current contract is due to expire this summer, but he is set to remain with his current side beyond the end of this term by putting pen to paper on fresh terms.

Rico Browne could benefit from Tony Mowbray's potential return to Birmingham City

Browne could potentially have the opportunity to thrive under Mowbray if he returns.

The 60-year-old has an excellent track record of developing young players, doing extremely well to take players like Jack Clarke and Pierre Ekwah to the next level.

He also played a huge role in Tyrhys Dolan and John Buckley's development at Blackburn Rovers, so Browne can be optimistic about his chances of thriving under Mowbray.

With Kevin Long gone, Marc Roberts potentially set to leave this summer and Emanuel Aiwu only on loan, there could be a space for Browne in the squad next season.

He may be playing quite low down the football pyramid at this moment in time, but a good pre-season could make all the difference and it would be a surprise if he isn't reassessed during that period before either being sent out on loan or kept for the first-team squad.
