Blues' star man looks set to miss Friday's big encounter at the King Power Stadium.
Birmingham City have been dealt a huge blow ahead of Friday night's trip across the Midlands to take on Leicester City, with star man Jay Stansfield set to be absent from the travelling party at the King Power Stadium.
Blues have sprung out of the blocks rather fast in the Championship under Chris Davies thus far, picking up victories over Blackburn Rovers and Oxford United whilst earning what could be an extremely important point against Ipswich Town in the season's curtain-raiser.
However, the West Midlands side weren't able to match the same levels of performance and results against Port Vale in the EFL Cup second round at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, with the League One side progressing after Jaheim Headley's 44th-minute header amid a much-changed starting lineup for the second-tier side.
This led to Davies calling upon the likes of the club-record signing in place of summer recruit Marvin Ducksch.
However, it was a gamble that failed to pay off, with the forward sustaining an ankle problem late in the encounter.
Stansfield continued his fine form from last season in League One with three goals in as many games across all competitions earlier in the month, producing smart close-range finishes against Ipswich and Sheffield United in the EFL Cup first round success, as well as a late penalty in the dramatic comeback victory against Blackburn on August 16.
The 22-year-old was unable to aid a comeback against Darren Moore's side in midweek though, with the substitute now also a 'major doubt' for Friday's crucial clash against the Foxes after coming off worst in a duel against new Vale left-back Liam Gordon in stoppage time.
Stansfield was then spotted at the club's 'EPIC' training base on crutches and has since been wearing a protective boot, with Davies giving his assessment of the situation post-match.
“Jay had a little bit of a knock towards the end of the game and was limping," said the Birmingham boss via BirminghamLive on Wednesday.
"He’s being assessed by the medical department today so I haven’t got the full extent of what exactly that is. We can’t add any more detail to it but he did take a knock.”
“I knew certain players like Marvin (Ducksch) and Kanya (Fujimoto) weren’t going to be able to last anyway, so I had planned to give them some time in that second half and I thought Jay and Paik (Seung-ho) could come in and really improve our level."
Given the depth at Davies' disposal, many believed that a frontline consisting of Ducksch, Kanya Fujimoto and Lewis Koumas - all of whom were making their competitive debuts for the club - alongside Lyndon Dykes, had enough ability to take the game to Vale.
However, failing to assert their attacking prowess in the first half led to Stansfield coming on and also being starved of very few chances prior to the aforementioned injury knock, with some Bluenoses left annoyed by the domino effect which has now played out.
One fan stated: "Had a feeling bringing him on for the whole of the second half would come back to bite us. Frustrating. He'd be a huge miss on Friday."
Another account was of the same opinion, saying: "Joke. We are more than capable of scoring yesterday without needing him on the pitch."
At the time the club's official account announced that the England Under-21 international was part of a triple-change alongside Ethan Laird and captain, Christoph Klarer, another Bluenose issued the verdict of: "Surprised he's not held Stansfield back after the shift he put in Saturday, would've put Kyogo on tbh"
After missing three golden opportunities against Oxford last weekend, another supporter believes this now provides Kyogo Furuhashi, the £10m buy from Stade Rennais, with an ideal opportunity of his own as he goes in search of his first Championship goal, claiming: "Kyogo has to step it up now".
One more supporter also pinned the blame on the largely below-par performance by a side that featured a number of squad players and new signings looking to build up their match fitness and sharpness.
Unsurprisingly though, this is a major blow to Blues' prospects of gaining another three-point haul against a side who are expected to be in the promotion mix at the end of the season, regardless of the uncertainty which hangs over the King Power at present.
