🚨 BREAKING: Man Utd knocked out of EFL Cup in stunning fashion by Grimsby | OneFootball

Manchester United and Rubem Amorim fell to a shambolic new low with a dramatic 12-11 penalty shootout (2-2 after 90 mins) EFL Cup second round exit to Grismby at Blundell Park.

Scorers: Vernam 22', Warren 30'; Mbeumo 75', Maguire 89'

Grimsby got straight into United from the first whistle and deservedly took the lead in the 22nd minute through Charles Vernam, who struck low past André Onana at the near post.

If the Cameroonian keeper could make a weak claim to not be at fault for the first goal, he was certainly at fault for the second.

He came and got nothing from a corner, allowing the ball to bumble to Tyrell Warren, who collected the gift and tapped the ball into an empty net.

Knowing he desperately needed a result and needed to make changes, Amorim brought on Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and  for the second half, but it had little to no instant impact as his side struggled in biblical-like conditions.

Grimsby were very unlucky to have two goals disallowed either side of the half, and Mbeumo finally got United back in the game with a typically lovely left-footed finish with 15 minutes to go.

From here, it was an onslaught and Grimsby finally fell with a minute remaining, Harry Maguire heading home at the back post from a Mason Mount corner.

Neither side could find a winner, and the game was decided by a stunning marathon shootout that went through all 11 players and back to the first two takers.

Grimsby held their nerve, scoring 12 of their 13 penalties, with Cunha missing the chance to send United through before Mbeumo hit the bar to spark wild scenes at Blundell Park and pile more misery onto the fallen giants and Amorim.
