Blues want to reinforce their already sturdy options in the middle of defence.

Birmingham City have emerged as the favourites to sign centre-back Terry Yegbe.

Despite having already signed two new central defenders, to add to the options that helped Blues have the best defence in League One last time out, Chris Davies still wants to add to his resources at the back.

It has been reported by Swedish outlet Expressen that Birmingham want to acquire Yegbe, a 24-year-old defender from IF Elfsborg, and that they are the favourites to do so.

They are said to be one of several clubs to have made a bid for the Ghanaian. A deal for him would set City back €4-6 million (~ £3.5-5.2 million), as per the report.

Ghanaian defender in Birmingham's sights

The club are clearly targeting further signings in this area of the pitch. Their manager didn't rule out the possibility of bringing former Rangers loanee Ben Davies back to the club after the signing of Eiran Cashin, who also joined Birmingham on a temporary deal.

It has since been reported by Football Insider that City and Russell Martin's side had agreed a fee for the League One promotion winner.

Meanwhile, their latest link, Yegbe, has admitted that he is aware of the reported interest from the Championship side, thanks to one of his teammates flagging it up with him. He told Fotbollskanalen that he eventually wants a move away from Elfsborg.

"I said I don’t know anything about it, because I’ve told my agent not to say anything about the transfer window. I just need to focus on Elfsborg now, regardless of what happens in the future.

"I want him [my agent] to keep the rumours between himself and Stefan [Andreasson, Elfsborg club manager].

"I want to move at some point, but what I mean is that when I hear the rumours, they go around in my head. I want to focus on Elfsborg now and let the others do their job."

Birmingham are slowly collecting the infinity stones

The Ghanaian international got his first taste of European football last season in the Europa League, facing off against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Athletic Bilbao and OGC Nice. At six-foot-five, he'd be another strong, physical presence to add to the manager's options.

Cashin is expected to partner Christoph Klarer at the back for Blues' first game of the new season against Ipswich Town, with free agent addition Phil Neumann unlikely to be fully fit for Friday's clash with Ipswich. The potential signing of Davies could alter those plans, though.

If both the former Liverpool defender and Yegbe are signed in the coming days or weeks, that'll give Birmingham depth in the centre of defence like no other club in the Championship, potentially setting them up beautifully for a second consecutive promotion push.
