Tottenham Hotspur star Rodrigo Bentancur could be in trouble for his part in the brawl that erupted following Uruguay’s elimination from the 2024 Copa America against Colombia.

According to Clarin, the midfielder faces significant punishment for his actions.

Uruguay players claimed Colombian fans breached security and attacked their families, forcing them to act.

Liverpool centre-forward Darwin Nunez fought with fans, and Bentancur hurled a bottle at a section of Colombia supporters.

However, the water bottle came down hard on the head of a member of his team’s coaching staff. His head was bloodied when the cameras panned to him.

Bentancur could be in hot water when the authorities investigate, and there is every likelihood of a suspension and hefty fine.

This incident comes just weeks after the former Juventus midfielder had to apologise to Spurs captain Heung-min Son for a racist remark he made.

Son accepted the apology, but the Football Association is still investigating the incident. He now has another case file opened against him.

Bentancur spent most of last season on the sidelines and faces a battle for his place in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

A lengthy ban will have him on the back foot when the season starts.
