Les Bleus had many positives to take away from its 4-1 victory over Australia. However, Benjamin Pavard’s performance may not have been one of them. In fact, Australia’s only goal came off of Pavard leaving Craig Goodwin unmarked at the back post. The Frenchman was able to finish the match in better form than he started, but offered very little in attack.
Pavard spoke to beIN sports following the match stating, “We saw that Argentina had difficulties against Saudi Arabia. We did not want to be in the same kind of situation. We played well. Our players were calm. We were calm even when we were loosing 1-0.”
France’s next World Cup match is against Denmark. It is worth noting that not only did France lose both matches against Denmark in the Nations League, but the Bayern defender struggled on both sides of the ball in the 2 goal defeat.
In Pavard’s defense, he was lined up in a more attacking wingback role that is even more foreign to him. Pavard is an important part of Deschamps’ system – he will need to turn things around for France to be at their best.
