Belgium are at the Women’s European Championship for the third time. And they’ll be looking to build on their quarter-final exit three years ago. They’ve played seven games at the tournament, winning two alongside one draw and four defeats. Last time out, Belgium finished second in a group containing Italy, with four points from their three games. But their run came to an end with a 1-0 defeat to Sweden in game four.
Belgium were in a tough group in qualifying for Euro 2025 and won just one of their six games, losing four. But given the change in format, they still had a chance through the play-offs. And Belgium stepped up when they needed to most. They beat Greece 5-0 on aggregate in the first round before knocking out Ukraine with a 4-1 aggregate victory to secure qualification. They’ve won two of their six competitive games in 2025, including a win over England.
Italy have been in the past seven Women’s European Championships, but they have struggled since the tournament was upped to 16 teams. Italy have bowed out at the group stage in each of the past two tournaments, with one win and one draw alongside four defeats. At Euro 2022, Italy took one point from their three games and finished bottom of their group. The only point they picked up was in a draw against Iceland, who drew all three of their matches.
There was a bit of a shock in qualifying for Euro 2025, with Italy topping their group ahead of the Netherlands. Italy did only pick up nine points from their six games, but they took four from two matches against Netherlands to lead the head-to-head. They’ve had a mixed 2025 so far, winning three, drawing one and losing two of their competitive matches this year. But they are fancied to finish second in the group, per Opta’s pre-tournament predictions from May.
There were not real shocks in Belgium’s squad for Euro 2025, with Tessa Wullaert expected to lead the line and the quest for goals. Nicky Evrard is the standout choice as goalkeeper, while they’ll look to build on an experienced defence.
Italy are yet to name their final squad for Euro 2025. But the likes of Manuel Giugliano and Cristiana Girelli are all expected to be involved. Aurora Galli will hope to make it having recently returned from injury.
Belgium won the most recent meeting between these two sides with a 2-1 win in 2023. But Italy do still edge the head-to-head, winning six of their 11 matches with Belgium alongside four defeats.
