Belgium had an early penalty appeal waved away when VAR opted to stick with the on-field referee’s decision despite what appeared to be a handball from Egypt’s Ahmed Hegazi.

Michy Batshuayi then hit the crossbar from a corner in the 9th minute, before Egypt took the lead in the 33rd minute, when Kevin De Bruyne was dispossessed following a bad touch and Mostafa Mohamed guided a nice finish past Thibaut Courtois from the edge of the area.

The second Egypt goal came early in the second half. Mohamed Salah was the provider with a super pass over the top and Trézéguet ran through to lash home.

Belgium substitute Loïs Openda pulled one back in the 76th minute when he finished off Yannick Carrasco’s cross, but it wasn’t enough to inspire a late comeback.

The Red Devils kick off their World Cup with a meeting with Canada at Al Rayyan Stadium on 23 November.
