Belgian Pro League 2024/2025 Preview: Kortrijk

Article image:Belgian Pro League 2024/2025 Preview: Kortrijk

Last season Kortrijk avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth. Lommel took them to extra-time in the relegation play-off, but striker Thierry Ambrose came good after missing most of the season through injury. With Freyr Alexandersson in charge, there is hope amongst the fanbase that this season could be a lot better. Add to that, owner Vincent Tan appears to have been won over once again by efforts of the players and staff. Tan has invested some money in the club to give them a better chance of a successful season in 2024/2025. Last year they had no manager or signings at this point in the summer, so things are already looking up.

Last seasons position: 14th

Transfers in: Takuro Kaneko (H.C Sapporo), Patrick Gunnarsson (Viking), Haruya Fujii (Bagoya Grampus), Gilles Dewaele (Standard Liege), Nacho Ferri (Eintracht Frankfurt, loan), Nathan Huyvevelde (Union St Gilloise, loan)

Transfers out: Raul Oprut (FC Dinamo, loan), Felipe Avenatti (free), Christalino Atemona (free)

Overview:

Already a better summer, and as a result a better looking squad than this time last year. The side have brought in some interesting players, such as the Japanese winger Kaneko and the teenage striker from Frankfurt Ferri. What will determine the season will be how long Alexandersson stays and if he can maintain the success he has already brought in such a short space of time. There were no expectations they he would keep them up last year, but now people are expecting a better season.

Having a fit Ambrose should certainly help. He was injured during the first game of the season last year, but when he came back he showed he has the quality to score goals at this level. The 27-year-old could feel like a new signing for the side this season. One area that will need to be looked at is replacing Abdelkahar Kadri when, not if, he departs. It is unlikely that the transfer window closes with the 24-year-old Algerian still at the club.
