Bayern Munich are looking to wrap up their Champions League campaign with a hundred per cent winning record, as they play hosts to Barcelona on Wednesday. The Bavarians are currently sitting at the top of Group E with five wins in five matches, eight points ahead of second-place. It essentially makes it a dead rubber affair for the home side, although they will be keen on maintaining their winning record nonetheless.

For Barcelona, though, it is arguably the most important game of the campaign. The Catalan giants are currently second in Group E with seven points, two ahead of third-placed SL Benfica. However, the Portuguese giants are facing a relatively easier contest against Dynamo Kyiv while having a better head to head record against Barca, meaning a defeat against Bayern could potentially see Xavi’s men bow out of the Champions League.

Talking Tactics

Bayern Munich

Julian Nagelsmann is unlikely to shift away from the 4-2-3-1 system he has predominantly used this season. The young tactician will look to take advantage of Barcelona’s leaky defence by concentrating on more firepower on the flanks, where he can effortlessly exploit the wide defenders. Bayern are also likely to play with a high backline, relying on the pace of Dayot Upamecano, in the case of counters.

Barcelona

Xavi may opt for a 3-4-2-1 formation against Bayern Munich, doubling up on the defence that needs to remain composed this midweek. Meanwhile, the marauding fullbacks will be in charge of providing the width going forward, whereas the wingers are expected to move in centrally and form a free-flowing front three.

Team News

Bayern Munich

Joshua Kimmich is unlikely to be available for this upcoming game against Barcelona, which is a massive blow for Bayern. Marcel Sabitzer misses out as well, although the hosts will be boosted by the return of Serge Gnabry and Niklas Sule, both of who are now fully fit and are in contention to start against Barca.

Barcelona

Barcelona were dealt with a massive blow as well, with Ansu Fati missing out from the matchday squad. Other key absentees include Pedri, Sergio Aguero, Sergi Roberto and Martin Braithwaite, but it appears Gavi is fit after picking up a knock in the defeat to Real Betis.

Predicted Lineup

Bayern Munich: Neuer; Sule, Upamecano, Nianzou, Davies; Goretzka, Tolisso; Coman, Muller, Sane; Lewandowski

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Araujo, Pique, Garcia; Dembele, Busquets, de Jong, Alba; Nico, Gavi; Depay

Prediction

Bayern Munich 4-0 Barcelona
