Bayern Munich are still hopeful that David Alaba will sign a new contract with the Champions League winners.
Negotiations have not gone as the Bavarians would have hoped, with a war of words breaking out between former club president Uli Hoeness and Alaba’s representatives.
Despite the differences between the camps, current Bayern president Herbert Hainer feels the deal on the table should be enough to convince the Austria international to extend his stay beyond the end of this season.
“I’m not giving up hope that we can still be successful at David Alaba because we made him a really competitive offer,” Hainer told German magazine kicker.
The Bayern chief also warned Alaba that the financial complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic will limit his options as a free agent.
“These times are really difficult,” Hainer said.
“Only together can we, clubs, players and advisors, achieve a good result – also perspectively for the benefit of football as a whole.”
Alaba has spent over a decade with the Bundesliga giants since joining their youth system from Austria Vienna in 2008.
