Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Mathys Tel, spending a reported €28.5m on a forward with just 50 minutes of Ligue 1 football to his name.

Tel is considered one of the best young talents in the game and made seven substitute appearances in the league with Rennes last season.

Bayern, though, have seen enough to spend a hefty fee on him.

“Mathys Tel is one of the biggest talents in Europe, a very fast, technically strong and versatile striker,” said sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić.

“With France’s U17s, he became European champion this year as the team’s captain.

“We’ve been watching him for a long time and have now been able to convince him to take his next important steps with us in Munich. We’re proud of that because there were a lot of clubs that wanted to sign him.”

Bayern, though, have won the race just over a week after selling Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona.

Tel won’t be trusted alone to replace the Pole’s goals, though, with Sadio Mané already arrriving from Liverpool and Serge Gnabry signing a new contract this summer.

“The development of such an extraordinary young player is an exciting project for all of us,” Salihamidžić added.

“Of course Mathys needs time now, he needs playing time and rhythm. We are all convinced that he has a great career ahead of him and that he will help our team.”
