Roared on by the Westfalenstadion crowd, both sides made an energetic start to the game, with Kingsley Coman missing a great early chance for Bayern and Manuel Neuer making a brilliant save to deny Marco Reus one-on-one.

Bayern appealed for a penalty in the 35th-minute when Axel Witsel blocked Robert Lewandowski’s effort with his arm but fortunately for BVB, Thomas Müller was flagged offside.

Two minutes later, 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko had a goal ruled out at the other end for offside.

Then, just before half-time, the deadlock was broken when Lewandowski met Serge Gnabry’s cross with a perfect header to beat Gregor Kobel in the Dortmund goal.

Five minutes into the second half Bayern doubled their lead. Alphonso Davies ghosted in behind Felix Passlack and his cross was flicked on by Lewandowski for Müller to apply the finishing touch.

The hosts kept going and moments after Erling Haaland had a goal disallowed for offside, Reus pulled one back with a stunning curling effort Neuer could only grasp at as it flew into the top corner.

But their comeback was short-lived and when Manuel Akanji was caught in possession on the edge of his own box by Corentin Tolisso, Lewandowski was on hand to slot home his second of the game.

In the battle of the new coaches, Julian Nagelsmann beat Marco Rose to the first piece of silverware of the season in Germany.
