Bayern Munich have confirmed that defender Alphonso Davies will be out for the “time being” after picking up a knock in the clash against FSV Mainz 05.

Davies started the game but lasted just nine minutes in the match after picking up a muscle injury and had to be replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.

The good news for the Bayern faithful is that the defender walked off the pitch, but it remains to be seen if he will play any further part in the campaign, with the club not offering a specific time frame for his potential return.

Davies will prove a huge miss for the record Bundesliga champions, but Thomas Tuchel’s side are well equipped to cope with the absence of the left-back.

Mazraoui slotted in at right-back while Joao Cancelo, whose future at the club is still under review, moved over to the left, where he is also adept at playing, having featured there for Manchester City.

The versatile Portuguese defender joined Bayern on an initial loan deal, but the club is still mulling over whether or not to exercise his enormous €70 million buy option.

While Davies’ injury comes as a setback to the team, it could offer the Portugal international a chance to establish himself in the team and prove his worth to the club’s bosses.

Davies’ importance to the team cannot be overstated, with the 22-year-old making 38 appearances across all competitions this season, chipping in with three goals and eight assists.

His impressive performances have seen him generate interest from Spanish and European champions Real Madrid, as well as Premier League champions Manchester City.

Los Blancos are short on cover in the left-back area with Ferland Mendy in and out of the hospital bed, leaving Eduardo Camavinga, who is naturally a midfielder, and Nacho Fernandez to deputise in his absence.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s side are in the market for a new left-back, with Cancelo no longer in the manager’s long-term plans, and they have a couple of options.

The Cityzens could try to use the former Juventus man as a makeweight for a potential deal for Davies, but it remains to be seen if Bayern will listen to offers for their impressive defender.
