Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick has discussed Thiago Alcantara’s desire to play in the Premier League amid continued speculation linking the midfielder with Liverpool.

Thiago has informed the Bundesliga champions of his desire for a new challenge following seven successful seasons in German football, the 29-year-old having won seven successive league titles since signing for Bayern from Barcelona in 2013.

Liverpool have strongly been linked with a move for the midfielder, with Jurgen Klopp a known admirer of the Spaniard’s talents, though the Merseyside club are yet to meet Bayern’s asking price in what is expected to be a quiet window of transfer activity at Anfield.

Thiago has just a year remaining on his contract and Bayern are expected to allow the midfielder to leave – rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer – and Flick admits he would ‘totally understand’ the Spain international’s ambition to sample English football after a trophy-laden spell in Bavaria.

“I can understand when a player is concerned,” Flick told Sport1.

“Thiago played in Spain for FC Barcelona and in the Bundesliga for FC Bayern Munich.

“If he wants to try again in the Premier League now, I totally understand. But it would be a shame because Thiago gives our game that certain something.

“That’s why I would like to have him as a coach on the team for the next few years, but that’s life. It would go on.”
