In a huge update, journalist Toni Juanmarti reports that Barcelona are very close to completing the signing of Real Betis and Argentina midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

As per the update, the 30-year-old’s signing on a free transfer is ‘very advanced’ at this stage, following a recent meeting between the club and the World Cup winner’s agents.

Rodriguez to sign a 2+1 contract

Rodriguez’s contract with Real Betis expires at the end of the ongoing season. The Argentine international has been on Barcelona’s agenda for a long time now and his signing was discussed last summer as well.

A move for him was being considered for January earlier this year before an injury put paid to any chances.

However, since returning from injury, the 30-year-old has done well on the field and is now believed to be on his way to Barcelona for free.

It is suggested that Barcelona could sign him on a two-year contract with an option for an additional year.

Replacement for Oriol Romeu

The update from Toni Juanmarti makes it clear that the news that Barcelona are set to sign Guido Rodriguez does not mean they will abandon their pursuit of a top pivot midfielder.

Instead, the Argentine is being brought in as a replacement for Oriol Romeu, who is widely expected to leave this summer.

Rodriguez’s signing is mainly being done to ensure additional quality depth in the No. 6 position so that Barcelona do not have to turn to emergency measures like using Andreas Christensen as a pivot.

While it is not yet fully sealed, it appears that Rodriguez could soon be a Barcelona player.
