Denzel Dumfries will not sign for Barcelona this summer, according to SPORT.

The La Liga champions have rejected the chance to sign the Netherlands international despite being offered a cut-price deal.

Super agent Jorge Mendes now represents Dumfries. He reportedly offered the player to Barca with a special release clause of just €25 million.

However, despite the seemingly tempting offer, Barca are unlikely to take the deal. Manager Hansi Flick and his coaching team were reportedly intrigued by Dumfries’ profile.

He fits the mould of an attacking full-back and would bring valuable experience to the team.

However, Flick believes the right-back position is already well covered. Jules Kounde is still his first choice right back, while Hector Fort will play back-up after showing plenty of promise.

If they need more options at right back, Flick is ready to use Eric Garcia in that role even though he is primarily a centre back.

Barca were initially interested in strengthening at full-back. The club made inquiries about some high-profile names earlier in the summer.

They made checks on Jeremie Frimpong, who eventually joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth around €40m.

On the other flank, they asked about Frimpong’s teammate Alejandro Grimaldo. The Spanish left back has a €15m release clause for La Liga clubs, but that interest didn’t develop any further.

Barca have focused on signing a new goalkeeper and a left winger. After acquiring Joan Garcia from Espanyol, they turned their attention to Marcus Rashford.

They were also linked with a move for Luis Diaz, but Liverpool were asking for far more than the Spanish club’s transfer budget.

Rashford is now on the cusp of joining the La Liga champions on loan with an option to buy.
