According to a recent insight from AS, it has come to light that Barcelona’s pursuit of Alexander Isak dates back to 2020, but back then, financial struggles prevented them from securing his signature at the time.

Currently, the Swedish striker’s name has resurfaced as a potential reinforcement, with sporting director Deco viewing him as an ideal option for the club’s attack. However, acquiring Isak will be challenging, given the current circumstances.

The previous chase

Interestingly, Juan Jimenez has reported through the Spanish outlet that the Catalan club has been tracking the striker for years. During the tenure of Eric Abidal and Ramon Planes in Barcelona’s technical department, Isak was already considered a possible addition.

His performances at Real Sociedad caught the club’s attention, though he was still refining his finishing ability.

Despite this, he displayed glimpses of brilliance, particularly in Real Sociedad’s Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Madrid in February 2020.

On that occasion, he delivered an exceptional display at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring twice and assisting another goal in a memorable 4-2 victory for his side.

At that point, Isak’s price was still within reach. However, after three successful seasons with Real Sociedad, he was sold to Newcastle for €70 million.

Barcelona have not lost sight

Despite his departure from La Liga, he has remained on Barcelona’s radar ever since.

Currently, Barcelona have Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres leading their attacking options. While Isak occasionally played on the left flank during his time at Real Sociedad, he has since established himself as a specialist in the central striker role.

Given the club’s existing options, a move for Isak may not be imminent, especially if Lewandowski continues to play a key role in the squad.

However, Barcelona’s long-standing interest in Isak suggests that his name will continue to be discussed as the club plans for the future.
