Barcelona target NEW 'primary option' and it has real implications for Liverpool

Barcelona have found themselves a new ‘primary option’ in the transfer market. It makes a deal with Liverpool very unlikely.

ESPN reports that Barcelona are strongly considering a move for Federico Chiesa. The Italian is out of favour at Juventus and free to join a new club for around £12m.

Barcelona have been searching for a new left-sided winger all summer, but came up short with Nico Williams and Rafael Leao. Chiesa, though, fits into their price range.

He's now considered a 'primary option' for the Catalonians and they could make a real push to get him before the window closes.

One other consequence of this, though, is that a move for Luis Diaz looks incredibly unlikely. Barcelona have been linked with Diaz consistently throughout 2024, and there were reports claiming interest just a week ago.

Diaz's father publicly claimed that his son 'dreamed' of a move to Barcelona, too, though that's nothing new for Liverpool fans.

It was always doubtful that they could actually afford Diaz, however, and the transfer would always hinge on either the Colombian forcing his way out or Liverpool actively pushing a sale. Maybe something could have happened when the Reds were on the brink of signing Anthony Gordon. Once that deal collapsed, it was difficult to see why they'd sell.

And so Barcelona move on to other targets. Diaz will stay - and could be set for an exciting season.

Luis Diaz staying at Liverpool

Arne Slot was adamant that Diaz would remain at Liverpool. That is almost certainly the case and now we get to see what the Dutchman can get out of the winger.

Diaz at his best is a fantastic player and one that virtually no defender can contain. The only problem is his final product and if Slot can 'fix' that, then Liverpool will have a winger worth an absolute fortune.

That will be the aim this season, with a move elsewhere essentially off the table.
