After a considerable time in the dark, Xavi’s Barcelona stepped out into the sun and looked revitalised against Atletico Madrid. The Azulgranas were inspired in attack, defended with unison and dished out 70 minutes of high-class football.
Yet, the one weak link on the night was Robert Lewandowski. The Pole was good with his movements and runs off the ball but failed to provide what was needed the most – a threat in the final third.
The veteran striker failed to hit the target despite having an xG of 1.50, missed three big chances and was awful in the face of goal.
The under-fire striker spoke to the media recently in an elaborate interview (h/t Mundo Deportivo) where he shared his thoughts on Barcelona, the club’s situation, the young players and his worrying form.
Lewandowski began his conversation with an overview of how he felt at the club and completely did away with the notion that the fans were against him.
“I feel very good, I know that everything has gone well, not only inside the club but also outside since I see how the fans support me. I feel like I’m at the right time and place.”
He then added a note on how Barcelona’s situation had stabilised after his incorporation, saying,
“Last year or two years ago, when I was not yet here, I saw that there were many issues around the club, but now I think we are on the right track and the players can focus.”
The Catalans have suffered in the UEFA Champions League in recent years. After two seasons of being eliminated in the group stages, Xavi’s men have finally broken the ice and made it to the knockouts this time around.
“Whenever I talk about the Champions League, we know that it takes luck and having all the players in the most important part of the season, when you also play the most important game,” Lewandowski said when asked to comment on the Champions League.
“If all our players are healthy, fit and ready, we can compare ourselves to anyone,” he added.
Finally, the Polish legend gave his two cents on how Barcelona must judiciously utilise young stars so as to prioritise not only their fitness but also their morale.
“With young players, you have to find a good balance between sometimes stopping them and sometimes training them, because it is not easy for them, since we are talking about playing for Barcelona, the pressure from the club, from the fans, from everyone outside.”
