Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski has assured that he felt discomfort during Poland’s 3-2 away win against Scotland and asked to be substituted as a precautionary measure.

The veteran Pole scored a penalty and provided an assist, helping his team secure a vital victory over Scotland. However, he had to be substituted partway through the match due to muscle discomfort, which prevented him from finishing the game.

After the match, Lewandowski explained that he experienced some discomfort and pain during the game. He decided to leave the pitch as a precaution to avoid risking a more severe injury that could impact his performance throughout the season.

The Polish striker is keen on improving his numbers with Barcelona and achieving success with his national team in the Nations League. He was quoted by Mundo Deportivo as saying,

“I felt discomfort and then there was some pain. I realised that if I took a risk today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow it could be much worse.

“For the good of the team and for my health, the decision was made to leave the field. The season will be very demanding. I could have up to 70 games ahead of me, so I need to manage my strength and energy wisely,” he noted.

Injury not too serious

When asked about the seriousness of his injury and whether he would be fit to play against Croatia on Sunday, 8 September, the Polish national team doctor, Jacek Jaroszewski, reassured that the injury was not serious.

Furthermore, coach Michal Probierz also confirmed that Lewandowski’s substitution was due to the discomfort he felt, emphasising the importance of maintaining his health throughout the long season.

“Robert was suffering so there was a change. The most important thing for him is to be healthy because the season is long for him,” said the national team coach.

Poland’s upcoming Nations League match against Croatia is scheduled for Sunday. Although Lewandowski’s discomfort does not appear to be severe, it remains to be seen if he will be fully fit to play or if he will need to rest.

For now, it is hoped that the striker will recover in time and continue his impressive form for both his club and country.
