As Ousmane Dembele reportedly closes in on signing a new contract with Barcelona, a fresh report from ARA has revealed an interesting claim made by one of manager Xavi Hernandez’s coaching staff about the French winger.

Dembele’s contract situation has been dominating the headlines for months together now. The 25-year-old has maintained that he wanted to stay at Camp Nou but has not accepted the club’s contract proposal as of yet.

The former Borussia Dortmund ace became a free agent after his contract expired on June 30. However, as things stand, he finds himself without any major suitor as PSG have ended their interest in him and Chelsea are looking at other options like Raphinha and Raheem Sterling.

It has left Dembele considering the possibility of re-signing with Barcelona, with reports claiming that the French international is now close to agreeing a two-year contract with the Catalan heavyweights.

Dembele is a player that Xavi holds in very high regard. The Barça manager has always spoken positively of the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner and even managed to get the best out of him in the second half of the season.

The manager has continuously batted for the winger and pushed the club to offer him a new contract when talks over an extension seemed dead in the water.

Despite his brilliance in the latter half of the last season, Xavi’s staff believes that there is plenty of work to be done on the winger, with one of the staff members spoke to ARA and said: “Dembele does not understand the aspects of the game, but we want him to stay.”

It is an intriguing revelation from the staff member, claiming that the Frenchman does not understand certain aspects of football. Despite what has been said, as iterated earlier, Xavi put tremendous faith in Dembele and he repaid that with some clutch performances.

Should he re-sign with Barça, more of the same will be expected, while Xavi and his staff will get to work on improving the facets of the game that he ‘does not understand’.
