Barcelona have decided to withdraw from their pursuit of Joao Cancelo, who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Manchester City.

The Portuguese full-back made a surprise switch to Allianz Arena on the deadline day of the winter transfer window after being left unhappy with his reduced role at Man City.

Cancelo has endured mixed fortunes with Bayern, impressing in his first few games before being dropped to the bench for a couple of games, including the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

Julian Nagelsmann addressed the situation, stating that the full-back was not showing enough intent in training but included him in the starting XI for the Bundesliga game against Augsburg.

Cancelo capitalised on the opportunity by putting in an impressive display in the 5-3 win, bagging a goal and an assist.

However, his future at Bayern remains uncertain as the Bavarians are reportedly reluctant to exercise his €70 million buy-out clause.

Barca have been keeping tabs on the former Juventus star’s situation as signing a right-back is one of their priorities this summer.

However, as reported by AS, the Blaugarana met with his agent Jorge Mendes in Porto on Tuesday, during which they learnt that the signing of Cancelo is impossible due to financial constraints.

Barca have been going through an economic crisis, and La Liga president Javier Tebas recently imposed strict restrictions on their transfer business for the summer.

The Catalan club could turn their attention towards Villarreal right-back Juan Foyth, who is also high on their wishlist.

The Yellow Submarine will not move from the €54m release clause. Barca want to include either Clement Lenglet, Nico Gonzalez or Sergino Dest as a makeweight in the deal.
